little bits of thread
"ma ma se, ma ma sa, ma ma coo sa
ma ma se, ma ma sa, ma ma coo sa"
listening to michael jackson's thriller takes me back to junior high and a summer hanging out with tina frook.
a couple of observations from the first listen after 10 years or so:
-- i had forgotten paul mccartney signing on the girl is mine and i'm glad i did.
-- more synth than i remembered, but i suppose you could say that about the entire decade.
-- wanna be startin' somethin' is a good pop song. i liked it then and i like it now.
-- quincy jones is a brilliant producer.
-- the home demo version of billy jean is interesting but not worth a download from iTunes.
turns out i seem to collect quite a bit of music produced by quincy jones. looking over my collection, it spans 4 decades and is interesting for it's variety: dinah washington, the themes from ironside, the cosby show, sanford and son, michael jackson, big daddy kane...oh yeah, he also co-produced the color purple, one of my favorite films.
this is probably too much information but what the heck: i love the theme from ironside. the bassline and the bass trombone behind that flute then the call and response bit with the horn section. sure, the soprano sax was cool for the time too, but i love me some horns and a good bass...
here's to quincy jones!

thriller, for me, is all chandra phillips! she was a michael jackson addict and she and i got in a big fight in Ms. Johnston's 8th grade science class over who was a bigger fag - MJ or Boy George. Ms. J had to break it up as we were disrupting the whole class... While Boy George may have ultimately won that contest, Chan will cheerfully admit MJ is the bigger freak today. But enough on that...
i too hated that song with paul mccartney and while i liked 'wanna be startin' somethin,' it was 'P.Y.T' that was my favorite - on the rest of your musings on quincy jones, well, i guess i'm just not that up on the things you are so i can't comment - though i think anyone who knows you knows your affection for bass and horns. :)

for me, the lyrics make p.y.t. hard to listen to now; in light his affection for young boys (yeah, i know he was found to be not guilty). p.y.t. is the most r&b of the bunch, so it wins some points for that.
right now, i'm listening to bobby brown's my perogative, next up is prince's kiss.
'...you don't have to watch dynasty
to have an attitude...'

ok i HATE that bobby brown song. thanks for putting that in my mind first thing. ;) however, while Kiss is a good Prince tune, for some reason I'm always a little off the beaten path with most people - my all-time favorite price song is Raspberry Beret. Just fantastic. What's next?

sadly, the 'glamorous life' by shiela e.
'...she wants to lead
the glamorous life
she don't need
a man's touch...'

ok that chuck of lyrics is eeirly you. i think i'll agree on the 'sadly' statement, but for other reasons...
will 'jungle love' and 'the bird' by The Time be next? they fall into the same genre/timeline for me.
i hope this ends soon.
